Living the first 22 years of his life in Edmonton, Alberta, Jarred Land went to study in Strathcona Composite High School and then later went to Northern Alberta Institute of Technology. In 1997, he moved to Vancouver, BC and founded zoom, a bicycle messenger company in downtown Vancouver.[2] During that time he bought a Panasonic video camera (DVX100) to create a documentary on bicycle messengers. In July 2003, Jarred registered the domain DVXuser.com and started a forum regarding his DVX100 camera to ask for help from other experts about film making to bypass film school.[6] He ended up selling his courier company in late 2004 to pursue a career as a cinematographer. Jarred Land and Nick Bicanic formed Purposelabs, with the motivation to work with Vision Research to tailor their scientific cameras to the cinematography world.[7]
Jarred Land has owned a courier company and has worked as a cinematographer and producer.
Landmine Media, Inc. is owned by Jarred Land (President), Jason E. Ramsey (Vice President of Operations) and Christine Ganda (Secretary/Bookkeeper).[8] This company controls three major websites which are DVXuser.com, REDUSER.net and Landmine.tv. All of these websites are owned by Jarred Land.
The DVXuser.com is the largest prosumer and professional camera forum on the internet. It has 83,950 users (as of October 13, 2011) and it contains 2,376,079 posts.[4] It was originally created for the discussion regarding Panasonic DVX100 camera but subsequently expanded to discussions of other cameras and general film-making topics.
Land created REDUSER.net as an offshoot of DVXuser as the development of the RED camera commenced. It was created in 2006, to help general people understand the technology and working of RED cameras. Jarred Land has personal accounts on both of these sites and he uses them frequently to keep his members informed about the new technologies in cameras and to update everyone about launch of his company's latest products.[9]
Jim Jannard, the founder of Oakley, was a member of DVXuser.com through which he connected with Jarred Land in September 2005 and began discussing the RED CAMERA. The company's first camera was the RED ONE and was supported by Peter Jackson and Steven Soderbergh.
Jim Jannard currently owns the company and Jarred Land is the "Fire Chief" (president) of the company.
